First, things I did not like:
- whitewashing Khan. Yes, that's still my biggest issue. I like Cumberbatch, I have since Sherlock, but I'm pissed that they put him in the role of someone who should, by all rights, be played by someone who isn't white. I reblogged a post on Tumblr that talked about it, and I very much agree with the quote it uses: "They are not whitewashing an Asian role, they are saying that the best genetic material that the entirety of this world and its diversity has to offer…still comes from a white guy." Which, oi.
Granted, I wouldn't be complaining so much had Benedict played someone other than Khan, or had he been what he said he was. Hell, I wouldn't be complaining at all had they hired a POC actor (like Kal Penn, thank you Tumblr, and a bunch of other actors but I admit, my Hollywood knowledge is not the best). But he didn't, they didn't, and now I am sad and angry.
- was the scene with Carol Marcus in her underwear totally necessary? Because she's a potential badass and I like her, and she definitely should get more time, but thanks to that scene people apparently cannot think of her as anyone other than "oh she's the girl who took her clothes off in a Star Trek film and got ogled by Kirk". Which, oi, not cool, there are other ways to establish Kirk's thing for girls that don't involve things like that scene (which I will henceforth pretend never happened, what scene with underwear?).
- you couldn't save the Khan storyline for later? Really? Really? AAAARGH. I LIKED THAT STORYLINE. WHY DID YOU FUCK IT UP.
- "oh we have shirtless scenes of Kirk and not-Khan WE'RE EVEN NOW RIGHT" ahaha NOPE. IT DOES NOT MAKE ANYTHING EVEN IT JUST MAKES YOU GROSS, ABRAMS, GROSS.
Things I liked:
+ the actors. That was pretty much the whole reason why I stuck around: they're all brilliant (with the exception of Cumberbatch, sorry man, but I feel like he just did an okay job), especially Zoe Saldana and Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto and Anton Yelchin and Karl Urban and who's the guy who's playing Scotty? EVERY SINGLE DAMN ONE OF THEM OKAY. THEY ARE AWESOME.
+ legit chills down my spine when Uhura spoke Klingon. No, okay, that entire scene: "Then let me speak Klingon." FOUR FOR YOU, UHURA. YOU GO UHURA. KICK ASS. (I will take an entire movie of Uhura just kicking ass and taking names and speaking foreign languages, especially since the last part does things to me that I never thought possible.)
+ LEONARD NIMOY'S CAMEO OMG MY HEART. YESSSSSSSSS.
+ Hikaru. Fucking. Sulu. MORE OF HIM PLEASE. Him and Uhura.
+ Chekov puttering around Engineering with the most adorable goggles while everything goes to shit around him, oh my god, AAAAAA BABY. I must hug you. I must hug you.
+ the minor characters whose names I can't remember but who were awesome all the same, GET ON WRITING FICS ABOUT THEM FANDOM. I want all the fics about the rest of the crew and how they get through their day-to-day lives on the Enterprise during her five-year mission. I want them all.

In other news, HANNIBAL HAD BETTER BE RENEWED. I don't think I've watched a show legally, on cable, every week or so since Encantadia, and that aired waaaaay back in...2003? 2004? Whatevs. But yeah, this is an amazing and epic show and it is on the verge of cancellation, apparently, wtf NBC wtf.
It's exploded on Tumblr, holy shit. I'm so proud of you tiny little fandom, I am so proud.

To celebrate the occasion, here's a writing meme I used to do a lot on Tumblr: I have a list of, in no particular order, fifteen characters. Comment with a scenario and at least two numbers from 1 to 15 (i.e. "2 and 12 are stuck in an elevator" or "7 and 4 are road-tripping to 9's wedding, what shenanigans do they get up to", though it can be more complicated than that) and I'll write you a fic!
